Rugs Bring an Entire Room into Focus
By Anita Winter Area rugs are often over looked when decorating a room simply because people seem to think these have only one purpose, to lie on the floor and be walked on rather than bringing an entire room into focus. The rug you choose is just as crucial to your design decor as the color of your walls. The point of this article is to help you place at the top of your product list just like you would the color of your walls or curtains. Choosing bold rugs such as an animal print is one way to bring statement to a room. Keep in mind that the bolder your rug the more neutral the larger furniture pieces should be in the rest of the room. Too many patterns and colors begin to compete with one another and can make a room cluttered and muddled. For example, if you have a black and white zebra rug you'll want your couch and other furniture pieces on the neutral side of color. Solid black or white will look nice but will not compete with the rug. If you use accessories you can introduce more color and pattern on a smaller scale. This way the accessories highlight the room and rug rather than steal all the attention. The size and placement of the rug is also important. You will want a good size rug in a large room but don't be afraid to place a large rug in a smaller room. People like the option of being able to buy a rug rather than spend more money installing carpeting. You will want to place your rug in several areas before you decide exactly where you want the furniture to be placed. You can place your rug in the center of a room and place furniture just around the edges of the rug so you have more of the rug to be seen and utilized or place a dining set directly on top of a large rug and let the edge of the rug frame the furniture and floor. If you decide to use more than one rug make sure that they are different sizes. For example, if you place a large rug in the center of your room and then place a smaller rug in front of your fireplace, this will still let the larger of the two rugs shine. This will also create an interesting room as well. Geometric rugs can bring a more modern edge to a room. Some will have multiple colors but will have a repeating pattern that can be mimicked throughout the space. For example if your Mid-Century modern rug has plenty of triangular shapes then let it be your inspiration. Purchase lamps that show off these similar shapes. You can find unique sconces and mirrors that have a more contemporary feel. Utilize the colors from the rug to accent the room. Be subtle in your accessorizing so that the rug can really be seen as the focal point. Here are some rugs that you'll love in your home.
