The precursor to today's Adirondack chair was designed by Thomas Lee in 1903 who was vacationing in a town on the edge of Lake Champlain, by the Adirondack Mountains, in Westport, NY. This is the town the first Adirondack chairs, called Westport chairs, were originally named after. He simply needed outdoor chairs for his new summer home so he made the first Adirondack chairs and tested the first designs on his family.

Thomas Lee's original Adirondack chair was made with eleven pieces of wood, cut from a single board. It had a straight back and slanted seat. The "slanted" design made it sit better on the steep mountain inclines of the area in and around Westport, NY. The hallmark of the Adirondack chair is the wide armrests - found on almost every Adirondack chair on the market today.
